Oct 23, 2009Distracted driving: We've all read the articles and heard the news stories, so I don't think we need any more convincing: The task of driving is critically important and the consequences for not paying proper attention can be fatal. Yesterday, I took the Insurance Bureau of Canada's distracted driving test, and while overall, I performed well while holding a drink, answering a cell phone call and attempting to write down an order for pizza, I was impressed to see just how bad my driving was in the 'playback' done at the end of the test. While I avoided the simulated accident which had happened in front of me, my speed was all over the place, I was failing to stay in my lane, and essentially driving as bad or worse than an intoxicated driver. I have the benefit of taking two 'defensive/advanced' driver training courses, one by Mercedes and the other by BMW. My experience there has taught me that those courses are worth their weight in gold, and that the only thing I should be doing while driving is concentrate on my driving. My philosophy is simple; many people die on our roads every year. Think of friends and loved ones and how they would be affected if you died or killed someone because you were not giving driving your full attention. Do we need any more convincing?
