Oct 19, 2009An update to the Uninsured Drivers comment: It now appears that the system to verify coverage may be in place by 2010. This is an important step to ensure that people driving on our roads have the legally required coverage. Initially, the system will deny plates and renewals to those who do not have a verified policy for the serial number of the vehicle they are licensing. Eventually, the system will be accessible to the police so that vehicles identified as being driven while uninsured can be impounded. This is a very welcome and long overdue initiative that will serve to increase the participation rate in the system to rates that should be similar to public auto systems.. In the long run, this will make insurance more affordable for everyone, and should also serve to make our roads safer by removing irresponsible individuals from our roads. Those of us who are responsible and put our hard earned dollars into the insurance system should not be subsidizing those who don't. For Mike's previous comments about uninsured drivers click here.
